Sacrum's story originated from the shared passion of four young veterinarians to develop veterinary medicine in Finland on an ethically sustainable basis. Before Sacrum, we all worked in distinguished small animal hospitals with skilled colleagues, where we got to develop professionally and learn how to meet people. However, over time, each of us began to feel that we could not always act in accordance with our own values. There was a sense that our industry needed a posture movement. At the same time, our paths crossed in working life on different occasions and we realized that the dream of a small animal hospital owned specifically by veterinarians was encountered in all of us.
We began to explore whether this was possible at all, and luckily we found that others believed in our vision as well. We were lucky enough to be supported by a great team of experts in various fields whose advice guided us forward. The advice of experts in law, entrepreneurship and civil engineering, among others, was invaluable to us as we progressed. Not forgetting the endless and altruistic support of family members and friends who were an invaluable asset in the midst of it all. The establishment of an animal hospital was not an easy process.
Among the most significant challenges along the way was finding a suitable commercial space. We set high standards for both the location and the building itself. Good accessibility, comfort from the point of view of both customers and staff, and the practicality of the premises in terms of work and patient safety were the primary criteria. When we first saw the facilities at Porttiparken in Vantaa, we knew immediately that this was the only option.
Next began the nerve-racking clearing and design work that required several approvals from different authorities and the preparation of numerous detailed plans with architects and other experts. The construction phase itself was a demanding task, where you had to take care of keeping schedules, budget control and high quality of the work. The procurement and installation of medical equipment and other necessary equipment was not straightforward either, as they required specialist expertise and careful planning. On top of all this, recruitment and staff training had to be taken care of so that the hospital could start its operations with skilled and competent staff. At the same time, the fear of bankruptcy and the words of skeptics at times caused despair and even tears.
However, each step in the foundation of the Sacrum brought with it successes that inspired us to always take the next action. At the same time, we noticed many like-minded colleagues setting up their own companies, and we realised that the sector was reforming. Through difficult times, we had a vision in which we wanted to be involved in building a great future for ourselves and for the entire veterinary community.
Thus was born Sacrum, our answer to the challenges of veterinary medicine.
