Feline Tooth Disorders — Symptoms You Should Not Ignore

📍 Veterinary Hospital Sacrum — Dental care and X-ray of cats

Dental diseases in cats are one of the most common, but poorly recognized ailments. The reason lies in the character of the cat: it is a master at disguising its pain. A cat can eat blisters normally, even if it has painful tooth damage in its mouth.

Most common ailment: Tooth decay (TR/FORL)

About half of adult cats have TR disease (Tooth Resorption, formerly FORL). In it, the cat's own organism begins to destroy the tooth tissue.

  • The lesion often begins at the gum line or root.
  • The disease is very painful.
  • The only treatment for a damaged tooth is to remove it with roots.

Because the lesions are often under the gum line or inside the tooth, they do not appear on top. Therefore, at the Veterinary Hospital Sacrum, cat dental care always includes a whole-mouth dental x-ray. Without X-rays, most ailments would go unnoticed.

Symptoms: How do I know if my cat is sore?

Even if the cat tries to mask the pain, the careful owner may notice minor changes:

  1. Change in eating habits: The cat chews only on one side, swallows the blisters whole, or drops food from the mouth.
  2. Crunching of teeth: audible sound when eating.
  3. Bad breath: The mouth of a healthy cat does not smell bad.
  4. Withdrawal: The cat is quieter or more grumpy than before.
  5. Drooling: Rarely, but possible in bad cases.

Prevention and treatment

Cat teeth should be checked at the veterinarian annually, for example when vaccinated. If tartar or redness appears in the mouth, it is time to book a tartar removal and X-ray examination.
