Back pain or lameness — how to distinguish?

📍 Veterinary Hospital Sacrum — Diagnostics of back diseases in Vantaa

When the dog moves with difficulty, the owner often suspects a foot defect. Surprisingly, the cause is often found in the spine. Dog back pain is a painful condition that requires a quick response, especially if it is a herniated disc bulge (dachshund palsy).

How do you know if your leg or back hurts?

Typical symptoms of back pain

Unlike a leg injury, a dog with back pain may not be lucky with one particular leg.

  • Roping: The dog stands with its back arched (like a cat).
  • Head position: The dog keeps the head down and does not want to look up (neck pain).
  • Screaming when lifting: When you lift a dog into your arms or into a car, it screams in pain.
  • “Walking on eggshells”: The steps are short, careful and stiff.
  • Stomach tension: Abdominal muscles are hard and pink due to pain.

When is it in a hurry? (Dachshund paralysis)

Certain breeds (dachshunds, French bulldogs, poodles) are prone to intervertebral hernia.

Call the emergency room (010 739 9130) immediately if:

  • The dog drags on its hind legs.
  • The dog jumps or falls (the rear end is deceiving).
  • The dog is unable to urinate.

This is a neurological emergency. The sooner the treatment (rest or surgery) is started, the better the prognosis will be for the recovery of the ability to walk.

Diagnostics

Differentiation of back pain and lameness requires examination by a veterinarian.

  • Orthopedic examination: Bending the limbs through.
  • Neurological examination: Testing reflexes and sensation.
  • Imaging: X-ray (spondylosis) or, if necessary, referral to an MRI (intervertebral discs).

If your dog has back pain, avoid jumping and stairs, and consult a veterinarian.
