Dog vomits — when is it time to go to the emergency room?

📞 On-call duty: 010 739 9130 (Animal Hospital Sacrum, Vantaa)

Dog vomiting is one of the most common reasons to go to the vet. Often the cause is improper food or mild stomach upset, but repeated or violent vomiting can be a sign of serious danger to life.

When dog vomits in a way that requires immediate departure to the emergency room?

Warning signs: Get to the emergency room immediately

1. There is blood in the vomit

Clear blood or a dark, coffee-chip-like mass in the vomit indicates bleeding in the stomach or intestines. This always requires research.

2. The dog tries to vomit, but nothing comes

This is a classic symptom of gastric torsion. The dog may be restless, drooling, and its belly may swell quickly. The condition is life-threatening and requires immediate surgery.

3. Suspicion of a foreign object

If the dog may have swallowed a toy, sock, stone or piece of bone, and begins to vomit, it may be an intestinal obstruction. The blockage can cause intestinal necrosis quickly.

4. Vomiting is accompanied by severe diarrhea and fatigue

If the dog loses fluids at both ends and becomes apathetic, dehydration quickly threatens puppies and seniors in particular.

When is home care enough?

If the dog vomits once or twice, but is otherwise its own happy self, the situation can follow.

  • Vomiting on an empty stomach: The dog vomits yellow foam in the mornings (heartburn).
  • Dietary change: The stomach reacts to new food.

Home care: Keep a short fast (in an adult dog), and then offer easily digestible food in small portions. Ensure water intake. If symptoms persist, make an appointment with the veterinarian.
