“How often do I need to bring my dog for tartar removal?”
This is one of the most frequently asked questions at our reception. The answer depends entirely on the breed, age of the pet and the success of home care.
However, one rule applies to everyone: By the time your teeth shake, it's already too late.
Recommendations for inspection intervals
Small dogs (less than 10 kg) and short-nosed breeds
- E.g. Chihuahua, yorkshire terrier, dachshund.
- In these breeds, the teeth are in a cramped mouth and tartar accumulates very quickly.
- Recommendation: Inspection and removal of tartar every 6-12 months. Many people need dental cleanings every six months to save teeth.
Medium and large dogs
- E.g. Retrievers, shepherd dogs.
- Tartar accumulates more slowly, but tooth fractures are common.
- Recommendation: Inspection during vaccinations, removal of tartar as needed every 1-2 years.
Cats
- In cats, tooth decay (TR disease) is common and invisible.
- Recommendation: Annual inspection. If the cat has previously detected changes in TR, a dental x-ray is recommended to be done annually.
“But isn't just a glance enough?”
At the vaccination visit, the vet peeks in the mouth, but it is only a superficial smear. Only a tartar can be seen from the mouth of an awake animal. The depth of the gingival pockets and the inner surfaces of the posterior teeth can only be clarified under dental anesthesia.
Regular treatment becomes cheaper in the long run than major dental surgeries.
