Itching is one of the most insidious ailments that deprives both the dog and the owner of the night's sleep. Constant scraping, licking and rubbing break the skin and expose it to inflammation.
But what is the cause of itching? Is it “just” fleas or a lifelong allergy?
Step 1: Ulcological (Easiest to Exclude)
Before talking about allergies, it is always necessary to exclude parasites. Even if the dog is groomed and internally tidy, it can become infected from the outside.
- Capitis: Severe itching (especially at night), flaking and hair loss. It also infects a person.
- Lice and midges: Can sometimes be seen with the naked eye on fur.
- Fleas: Rarer but possible in Finland (e.g. hedgehog flea).
The veterinarian can determine the parasites using a scratch sample or a tape sample.
Step 2: Allergies
If the parasites are evicted and the itching persists, suspicion turns to an allergy.
- Atopia (Environmental Allergy): The most common cause. The dog reacts to dust mites, pollen or mold spores. Itching often targets the paws, face, ears and groin.
- Food allergy: The dog is allergic to some protein in the food (e.g. beef, chicken). Symptoms are similar to those of atopy, but may be accompanied by abdominal symptoms.
When for examinations?
Do not be left to try shampoos at home if the skin is broken or itching is constant. Come to the reception at the Veterinary Hospital Sacrum if:
- The dog scratches the skin for blood.
- The skin reddens, smells bad, or secretes pus (skin infection).
- The dog licks its paws compulsively.
We will find out the cause of the itching systematically and bring relief to your dog.
